The evolution of Lighting Fixtures

The evolution of lighting fixtures

Lighting fixtures have evolved over time to become more functionally efficient and environmentally friendly. The way in which some of the first lighting fixtures were created and the advances that were made, have today totally transformed this concept through which each of us enjoys a modern, aesthetic and functional lighting system. It's amazing how much lighting fixtures have changed over the years. From natural light, to candles and gas lamps, from single bulb lighting fixtures to contemporary models with LED technology, the developments have been major.

From torches to chandeliers and lighting systems with LED technology - a brief history of lighting fixtures

In the past, people relied on the light produced by torches, candles and hearths to light and heat their homes. With the advent of electricity, light bulbs became elementary and changed the way people's daily activities were carried out. The mass use of light bulbs allowed a vast diversification of activities and the optimal use of time, especially in winter, when the day was shorter. The moment of using the incandescent light bulb was a turning point for humanity, but also for industrial evolution and transportation.

The first lighting fixtures used in antiquity were torches and candles, however these sources did not cover the needs, which is why the effort to discover more effective alternatives was constant. In the following centuries, candles were replaced by candles and gas lamps, which were safer and had a longer lifespan than candles. The Middle Ages can be considered the "era" of lamps and candles, and they experienced many improvements over time, being made more efficient with the discovery of cotton wicks and oils with a high burning point.  The XV-XVI centuries were important, as public lighting was initiated then, London being the first capital to benefit from this lighting system. In 1414, the Mayor of London ordered the installation of lanterns on All Saints and Candlemass thoroughfares. Later, Paris was the next capital of Europe to benefit from public lighting. The whole process was a difficult one, as it was done manually.

October 21, 1879 is a historic date in the evolution of lighting fixtures, because it was then that the first light bulb was lit that lit continuously for 40 hours. Thomas Eddison is the one who improved and patented the light bulb invented by Heinrich Göbel in 1854, and from that year, the evolution of lighting fixtures was as fast as it was natural. If initially the focus was on the lifetime of the bulbs, later, with the improvement of technologies, the focus was on aesthetics and variety.

The contemporary period comes with new challenges in terms of lighting fixtures. Now the focus is on sustainability, energy efficiency and the production of lighting fixtures that offer comfort in exchange for reduced consumption. Filament bulbs and halogen variants are gradually being replaced by variants with LED technology, which are more economical, more durable, but very efficient.

It is hard to imagine a world without lighting fixtures. They come in all shapes and sizes and have seen major changes over the years, being adapted to meet efficiency and aesthetic needs.

Modern lighting fixtures - general characteristics, types, peculiarities

It's interesting to think about how lighting fixtures have evolved over the years. The first designs were really quite simple - a metal or wooden frame with a piece of cloth or paper stretched over it. But as time passed and needs changed, so did the design of the lighting fixtures. These began to become more intricate, with glass shades and detailed metal elements. Then, as electric light became popular, their appearance evolved again to meet consumer demands.

Today we also have many options when it comes to lighting fixtures. There are a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It can be a little daunting for someone who is not familiar with the rich offer, but with a little patience and research, you can find the lighting devices that meet all needs, whether you need LED chandeliers for the kitchen, lamps for the living room or vintage bulbs to define a special decor.

Today, there is also variety on the operating side of control systems, designed to support a wide range of visual needs and energy management objectives.

In the last two decades, LED technology has revolutionized lighting, and control command systems have seen a quieter, but still significant, evolution. Recent features include independence from circuits, such as wireless communication or color adjustment. Modern lighting systems can now be controlled remotely via bluetooth or wifi.

Thanks to the development of technology, lighting systems allow the integration of other components and the creation of complex circuits. Systems of the following type have been developed:

  • LED RGB wifi controller,
  • RGB LED strip with remote control,
  • led strip music controllers,
  • phone controlled LED strip
  • chandelier with bluetooth speaker

Types of lighting

Depending on the purpose of a room (used for sleeping, relaxing, cooking or study), the lighting system must correspond to the decor and the particularity of the interior. Although one usually opts for a single light source that can satisfy the basic needs, there are several types of lighting solutions, each of which can be used at a specific time to create a certain ambient state or satisfy a certain need. The four basic types are: general, ambient, accent or focus lighting.

General lighting

The main purpose of the general lighting system is the optimal lighting of a room. This creates an overview of the interior. The integrated sources provide in this situation a uniform level of illumination of the entire space. The ambient lighting system is independent of other systems or light sources.

Among the types of lighting fixtures that provide ambient lighting, we find chandeliers in various forms, such as glass chandeliers, bronze chandeliers, LED chandeliers with remote control, crystal chandeliers, bedroom chandeliers, recessed fixtures, including recessed ceiling lamps or LED panels. Both warm natural light and cool light can be used for general lighting.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is preferred to easily ensure visibility and create a perfect setting for relaxation. Ambient lighting is especially popular in massage, yoga, psychotherapy offices, but is also commonly used in residential, indoor and outdoor, hotels, cafes, clubs and restaurants.

To create a relaxing, pleasant and warm effect in ambient lighting, it is recommended to use floor lamps. There is an extensive variety of pieces that stand out through shapes, finishes, materials. From the living room floor lamp, crystal floor lamp, classic floor lamp to vintage wooden floor lamp, they all allow the creation of a distinguished decoration.

Other solutions for environmental improvement are lamps. And these are very varied: modern lamps, kitchen lamps, bathroom lamps, hanging bedroom lamps, chandeliers with spotlights that use warm light.

Focus lighting

Focus lighting or specific lighting is the one oriented on a certain space, such as a corner for reading or meditating, an office or an area for carrying out activities that involve focused lighting (the area for drawing, designing, sewing, etc.). In such environments, a strong light, located at a smaller focal point of the room, is required. To create a pleasant overall aesthetic, it is recommended to avoid strong lights or lighting fixtures that show light shadows.

For focus-type lighting, the types of lighting fixtures that lend themselves are spot chandeliers, wall-mounted chandeliers, LED strips and remote control applied in the workspace area, desk lamps or suspended lighting fixtures.

Accent lighting

Accent lighting is used to increase focus on a focal point or to achieve a certain effect. Accent lighting gives the impression of a large space and can also highlight a certain feature of a sculpture, collection or architectural elements. As a general rule, accent lighting manages to add extra personality to any room in which it is integrated.

Among the types of lighting fixtures that provide accent lighting are LED strip with sensors, RGB LED strip with remote control and multi-colored light play, recessed sconces or wall-mounted sconces or chandeliers.

Decorative sconces, ceiling lights, outdoor chandeliers, outdoor patio chandeliers or other outdoor lighting fixtures that come in a variety of styles and sizes can be used for outdoor lighting.

Lighting fixtures with remote control

The latest lighting fixtures come bundled with a remote control, but there's a good reason for that. Lighting fixtures that operate with the help of a remote control offer optimal control over the lighting system. With a remote control, the light can be turned off, on, dimmed, or the light spectrum or colors can be changed. Remote-controlled lighting fixtures are a way for manufacturers to make everyone's life a little easier, but also the solution at hand to benefit from more sustainability.

Types of bulbs used for lighting fixtures

Lighting can make a major difference between a welcoming space or a gloomy one, vibrant colors or colors lacking personality, a state of relaxation or meditation, and also the difference between an energy-efficient home and an expensive one. An attractive home or public space that aims for a comfortable feel needs good lighting. But lighting systems have so many variables, from brightness and color to temperature and energy efficiency, that sometimes choosing the right bulb can be difficult.

There are different bulbs available for light fixtures, including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and LED bulbs. Each of the four types of light bulbs has different characteristics, including the quality of the light they emit, the amount of energy consumed, or the price.

  • Today's incandescent or filament light bulbs have been around since Edison perfected them. They produce a lot of heat, which makes them ideal for use in bedrooms. They do not have a very long service life, which means that they require periodic replacement. In addition, they are high consumers of electricity. However, they are cheap and provide a warm light and allow full illumination of the room in which they are used.

  • Fluorescent light bulbs were first created in the early 1900s by Frenchman Georges Claude. They were originally designed to help conserve electricity, which was expensive at the time. Today, fluorescent light bulbs are still widely used and are sold in various sizes, but also retain their cylindrical shape. Fluorescent lights are known for their bright white light. These bulbs are cheap and widely available, but they generate a lot of heat and, like filament bulbs, require frequent replacement.

  • Compact fluorescent bulbs or energy saving bulbs are the types of fluorescent bulbs that use 70% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. There are two varieties of compact fluorescent bulbs: those with a warm color spectrum and those with a cool color spectrum. Cool-light CFLs tend to emit a bluish tint, while warm-spectrum CFLs tend to have yellowish tones.

  • LED bulbs are becoming more and more popular due to their low energy consumption, longer life and high efficiency. LEDs emit light using semiconductor materials and use only 10% of the energy used by traditional light bulbs. They are also much more durable, lasting 10 times longer than traditional light bulbs. In addition to having low energy consumption, LED bulbs are also extremely affordable.

Applicability of lighting fixtures

Lighting fixtures make everyone's life easy, comfortable and more beautiful. Thanks to the development of technology, the shapes and sizes of lighting systems have undergone changes so that, nowadays, they integrate perfectly into any style of interior design. Depending on the lighting destination, they are classified into:

  • Fixtures for lighting residential buildings;
  • Lighting fixtures for industrial premises;
  • Architectural lighting systems;
  • Fixtures for office and commercial lighting;
  • Outdoor lighting fixtures, terraces, pergolas, garages;
  • Fixtures for lighting medical spaces;
  • Fixtures for street lighting.

Materials used for the manufacture of lighting fixtures

You may not think much about light fixtures, but they play an important role in the overall look of your home. Over the years, they have evolved from simple, functional objects to pieces of art that can add style and personality to any room.

The choice of material affects the aesthetics of the product, which is particularly important in a room, but also how the lighting fixture will work in different conditions. Brass, iron or crystal are just a few examples of components that have been used over the years. Each material has its own unique properties that make it perfect for a particular application.

Brass is an excellent choice for lighting fixtures as it does not corrode in wet environments, while iron is perfect for fixtures that need to be strong and durable. Crystal is often used in chandeliers because it creates distinct plays of light then during operation.

Metal is a popular choice for many lighting fixtures. It is strong and can be molded into any shape, meaning it can be used to create some really complex designs. In addition, it is a good conductor of electricity, so it helps create a bright and powerful light.

Glass is another material that is often used in making lighting fixtures. It comes in a rich color variety and can be shaped into any shape, making it a truly versatile choice. In addition, it allows light to pass through it easily, so it creates a really beautiful effect.

Wood is also on the preference list of product designers. It is popular due to its properties related to sustainability and the distinguished aesthetics it provides to the final products. It is strong and durable and can be carved into any shape. It has a very warm and inviting look, perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere.

Hot or cold? What light is ideal?

When it comes to choosing the right type of light, there is no one answer that works for everyone. Factors such as the desired effect and the climate in which it is used must be considered. Warm white light has a yellow-orange hue that makes people feel relaxed and sleepy, while cool white light has a bluish hue that can boost cognitive function. It is important to choose the right color, because it creates a mood, but also an optimal environment for the activity that is carried out in the room.

The color of light is measured in degrees Kelvin (K) and is actually given by the color temperature. Each temperature offers a different ambience, which is why it is essential to choose bulbs according to your own needs. When purchasing light bulbs, the following aspects should be considered:

  • for the living room and bedrooms, you can choose warm colors, with a temperature between 2000 K and 3000 K. The light of the bulbs is yellow, ensuring the perfect atmosphere for relaxation spaces;
  • kitchens and bathrooms require a color temperature that varies between 3500 K and 4000 K. Colors found in this temperature range are called cool white or neutral white and ensure balance;
  • lighting fixtures using bulbs with temperatures between 4000 K and 5000 K are recommended for focus, work areas, where the need for clarity and details is essential. This category includes lighting fixtures such as reading lamps or makeup application lamps. The color of the light has shades of blue-white;
  • lighting systems with more than 5000 K are very intense and are suitable for commercial or large interior spaces. It provides sufficient visibility without tiring the eyes.

What are LED bulbs? What about SMD and COB LEDs?

LED bulbs are essentially electrical components that produce light using light emitting diodes (LEDs). LED lighting fixtures produce light up to 90% more efficiently than those using normal light bulbs.

LEDs can be found in the form of SMD and COB LEDs. SMD LEDs represent a point light that is emitted by several point light sources attached in complex systems. They are used, as a rule, to equip lighting fixtures such as LED strips, LED tubes, but also LED panels, projectors or street lamps.

COB LEDs are used for the production of LED recessed spotlights or high-power projectors. COB LEDs are surface lights, they have a uniform illumination, the angular beam is easy to adjust. These variants do not provide that brightness of light, which SMD LEDs have. COB LEDs have a larger number of diodes than SMDs, but at the same time, they only have one circuit and two contacts. For this reason, they cannot be used for the manufacture of RGB, RGBWW+NW+CW lighting fixtures, color changing systems.

How are LEDs used in lighting systems?

In terms of their use, LEDs are incorporated into light bulbs and lighting fixtures. Due to the small dimensions, it helps to create unique body designs. Certain models of lighting fixtures with LED technology may be similar in appearance to classic ones, but the difference in energy efficiency is large.

Some fixtures with integrated LED technology may have built-in lighting elements as a permanent light source. Here you can find: LED strips, LED chandeliers, LED chandeliers with remote control or multi-colored LED systems with remote control.

There is also hybrid technology, which combines traditional incandescent or economical bulbs with LED ones. These associations usually complete unique concepts.

Lighting systems that use LEDs have wide applicability, also offering extraordinary opportunities in terms of room lighting.

Can the lighting fixtures with LED technology also be used outdoors?

LED lighting fixtures are available in a versatile selection of designs, shapes and sizes, both for decorating interiors and creating a spectacular spectrum of light outside buildings. The only condition for them to be used outside is that the fittings are suitable for their operation in the open air. Otherwise, they will deteriorate and fail due to sudden changes in temperature and environmental conditions.

For increased resistance over time, for outdoor installation, lighting fixtures made of materials such as stainless steel, plastic or aluminum are recommended.  It is good to know that such LED lighting fixtures have a much lower consumption than classic lighting fixtures.

Why is it preferable to use LED technology?

Lighting fixtures have evolved a lot in recent years. With the advent of LED technology, we can now enjoy an unlimited variety in terms of aesthetics. Modern LED lighting systems are among the most popular lighting solutions today, with LED technology completely changing the way we light our homes.

When it comes to lighting fixtures, LED technology is the best solution. Here are just a few of their advantages:

LEDs are more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs.

They last longer so you won't have to worry about changing them.

They produce less heat, so they are safer to use in confined spaces.

They are available in a variety of colors and styles, so you can find the perfect model for every need.

LEDs are quickly becoming the standard for lighting fixtures, and for good reason.

What is dimmable or dimmable and how is it used?

The power of a lighting fixture is measured in lumens (lm), known as luminous flux. As a fixture's light is dimmed, the lumen output decreases. This also affects the amount of energy used, because as the intensity of the light will decrease, so will the energy consumption, which certainly contributes to lower electricity costs.

The adjustment of the light intensity is carried out with the help of a built-in device, more precisely a controller integrated in the system of turning on/off the lighting fixtures.

The advantages of using a dimmable system are numerous. First of all, it is much more convenient to use such a system for adjusting the world to save energy. Instead of classic 200 watt or 300 watt bulbs, 4 watt spotlights or 3W LED, 4W LED or 7W LED bulbs can be used, these practices will produce savings of up to 90%. Also, the lifespan of the bulbs is much longer, reaching up to 30,000 hours.

Whether it is residential or commercial lighting such as hotels, cafes or other public places, dimming is extremely important. The possibility of adjusting the light creates a pleasant and special atmosphere in any room.

Motion sensor lighting – features, app control and benefits

Motion sensor lighting uses technology to automatically turn lights on and off based on motion detected by sensors. The advantage of using lighting with motion sensors is that it saves electricity and reduces heat emission. Another great thing about motion sensor lighting is that it can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app.

It is perfect for use in rooms where people spend their time watching TV, playing video games, reading books or simply relaxing. For efficient lighting, you can choose models of: lamp with indoor motion sensor, LED lamp and motion sensor, outdoor lamp with motion sensor, LED strip with sensor or different models of light fixtures with indoor or outdoor motion sensor, depending on the needs.

Control via smartphone app

Smartphone apps allow you to control lighting with motion sensors from anywhere in the world. You can adjust brightness levels, set schedules and even create custom lighting programs. These apps are compatible with both iOS and Android devices. If you have a smartphone, you can download these apps at no cost.

The benefits of using motion sensor lights

There are many benefits to using motion sensor lighting. One of them is that you don't have to worry about turning the lights on and off manually. When you're not home, motion sensor lighting will keep the lights off while saving money on your electricity bills. Motion sensor lighting also helps extend the life of bulbs. Another benefit is that you save space by eliminating unnecessary light fixtures. Lighting with motion sensors are compact and require less space than traditional lighting systems.

How much does a lighting fixture consume?

Each lighting fixture has a monthly consumption determined by the type of bulb used to produce the light. To determine how much a light fixture consumes, the number of watts must be tracked. Incandescent and halogen bulbs with more than 100 W consume the most electricity. Probably the best way to find out how much energy such a bulb uses is by converting the power to kilowatts. Thus, a 200 W light bulb will require 0.2 kW per hour.

Compact or economical fluorescent bulbs are among the most common bulbs used for lighting fixtures. Their powers tend to vary between 7 and 75 W, which leads to a consumption of up to 60% less energy than an incandescent bulb, being more efficient.

As for LED bulbs, they are the most efficient bulbs, with low energy consumption. The power of led bulbs varies between 1W and 15W and can be used for a wide range of lighting fixtures, more and more manufacturers are turning to this type of lighting, being much more sustainable and friendlier to the environment.

What is the lifespan of lighting systems?

The effective lifetime of the lighting fixtures is unlimited. They are out of use when, for various reasons, they fail, discolor or break. As for LED lighting systems, it can be said that they have a lifespan of between 10 and 20 years, taking into account how they are used.

However, light fixtures should be replaced every 4-5 years. However, this term can be modified depending on the material from which the lighting body is made, the quality of the product, as well as the design preferences, which change with the redevelopment of the interior spaces.

The lifetime of the bulbs used for the lighting fixtures varies, depending on each individual model. Incandescent bulbs have a relatively short lifespan of only 1000 - 2000 hours. Those with halogen last a bit longer, reaching up to 3000 hours. Bulbs known as energy efficient can have a lifespan of between 8000 and 15000 hours, while LED bulbs have a specified range of between 50000 and 100000 hours.

How to mount a light fixture?

Regardless of the lighting fixture model chosen, before starting any step, it is necessary to turn off the electricity. The next step is to analyze and distinguish the electrical wires from the ceiling or wall so that they can be installed correctly. There are usually two wires, a blue neutral wire and a red, brown, black, or in some cases gray live wire. Lighting fixtures that will be operated by a single switch, require a single phase cable, the neutral one being insulated with special tape for electrical installations.

The next step is to connect the existing cables to those of the light fixture. Then, depending on the chosen model, be it a chandelier, classic chandeliers or sconces, the bodies are fixed to the ceiling with the help of dowels found in their packaging.

What are the most common lighting problems?

Some of the most common problems related to the installed lighting system are represented by insufficient light for specific needs, too much glare in certain areas, inadequate contrast between different lighting fixtures, unevenly distributed light or bulbs that flicker when working.

All this can be easily avoided when lighting fixtures suitable for the interior spaces in which they will be installed are chosen, with suitable bulbs and properly mounted.

Why should lighting fixtures be upgraded?

You may be wondering if it's really worth upgrading your light fixtures. Why bother when the old ones still work just fine? There are several reasons why you should consider making this exchange. For starters, modern, newly installed fixtures will be more energy efficient and can help you save money on your energy bill as they are optimized over older fixtures.

Perhaps the best reason to upgrade is related to the fact that new technologies including lighting fixtures provide a great way to update the look of your home.

How to calculate the amount of light needed in a room?

When it comes to lighting, precision is key. The solutions included and used are intended to provide the right level of light. The luminous flux should be neither too strong nor too weak. The best way to check how much light an interior space needs is to access a room lighting calculator. It measures brightness in lumens and the resulting information can be used to adjust the lighting system accordingly. By doing so, you'll minimize eye strain and improve overall productivity.

There are several factors to consider when calculating the lighting of a room. First, consider the size and shape of the area you're working with. Next, decide what type of light you want to create. Finally, choose the right light fixtures and bulbs.

Here are some general things to keep in mind:

  • size and shape: depending on how big or small the space to be lit is, certain fixture designs will integrate better to achieve the desired effect. Stronger lights will make shadows appear darker, while softer lights will result in lighter shadows. To find out the size of the room, multiply the length by the width thus determining the number of square meters.
  • light intensity: the number of lighting fixtures should be consistent with the type of interior. Thus, for each zone, the number of lumens influences the choice of the number of lighting fixtures.
  • types of lighting: there are different types of lighting - ambient (which creates a general feeling of lighting), focus (for specific tasks such as reading) and accent (to bring out certain details). Ambient lighting usually consists of several sources spread evenly around the room, while task or accent lighting can be placed at strategic points. Taking this information into account, the choice of lighting fixtures according to the amount of light required is calculated by multiplying the square footage of the room by the number of lumens required for each space. For example, for a 20 sqm bedroom, lighting systems that reach 400 lumens will be needed. (20 sq m x 20 lumens).

What kind of lighting fixtures fit in the bedroom area?

When it comes to bedroom lighting, although these rooms are a place for rest and relaxation, they should not be too dark. The bedroom is a space where you must be able to see clearly, so you should not choose too many subtle bodies.

The selection of lighting fixtures for the bedroom should take into account the creation of a relaxing atmosphere. So it is important to choose suitable models for this space. Lighting systems positioned both on the ceiling and on the walls will create a balanced look and provide enough light to create a friendly environment.

Chandeliers and wall sconces can be chosen, simple or elegant, vintage or minimalist. The important thing is that it aligns with the entire design of the bedroom, for a uniform look. For example, wall sconces will make evening reading much more pleasant.

Hanging chandeliers come in different designs and have a modern look that can visually stimulate the entire space. They are elegant and at the same time manage to add a touch of drama to the bedroom. Choosing between simple fixtures with glamorous bulbs or intricate LEDs with a complex design, the lighting can be used both as a source of illumination of the space and as an accent for the decor.

Installing modern chandeliers in bedrooms can create an opulent atmosphere or, on the contrary, create a relaxing environment.

What type of lighting is suitable for children's rooms?

One of the most important elements in the children's room is the lighting system. When it comes to lighting for little ones' bedrooms, there are a few essential things to keep in mind. First of all, the light must be bright enough for the little one to easily carry out their daily activities, but not so bright as to be uncomfortable.

It is recommended to purchase lighting fixtures that meet the highest quality and safety standards, but which are also ergonomic and easy to use. Children can be picky about such things, so it's best to avoid any designs that might be too complicated or confusing.

Finally, choosing a lighting fixture that is consistent with the overall style of the room will pleasantly change the aesthetics of the interior. A brightly colored accessory could be fun for a child's bedroom.
